Wastewater Treatment - A Guide to wastewater

Wastewater treatment plants play an important role in our water systems. Wastewater that is improperly treated can threaten to poison our groundwater supplies, especially drinking water. This is because some pollutants, such as organic solids, may be too dense to pass through the wastewater treatment plant and end up being decontaminated in wastewater treatment plants. Recontamination occurs when the treated wastewater is discharged into a wastewater treatment facility or into a natural drainage system. In either case, treatment plants use highly advanced biological processes to convert the contaminated wastewater into harmless liquid substances, such as water, fuel and solids.

The primary process of wastewater treatment services involves treating the wastewater with oxygen. This is achieved by mixing the treated wastewater with oxygen in an oxygen-containing medium, such as an oxygen carrier. The resulting liquid is then further treated with additional oxygen, and either stored for later disposal or released into a different container. The primary stage of treatment therefore converts the solids to a liquid medium in which they can further be treated, as described above. The secondary treatment of wastewater usually only involves the removal of materials that are insoluble in water, such as oil and grease.

There are three primary processes of wastewater treatment. The first is referred to as primary stage, and the second and third stages are referred to as secondary stages. The first stage of wastewater treatment merely removes dissolved solids from the wastewater, while the secondary stage involves more extensive processing in order to convert the solids to a liquid form. The most commonly used treatments for both the primary and secondary stages of wastewater treatment are carbon adsorption for improving odor and taste, mechanical filtration for removing grease and oil, ion exchange and chemical precipitation for removing unwanted nutrients, and mechanical filtration for removing large particulates of matter that are insoluble in water. With all these processes, wastewater is usually safe to be discharged back into the natural environment.
