Wastewater Treatment - What is It?

Wastewater, commonly known as blackwater, contains very harmful substances like sewage, urine and drainage containing chemicals and pollutants that can affect human health adversely. Though treated sewer water is safe to drink, many people prefer to install a wastewater treatment filtration system to make safe and healthy water for drinking and other household use. A well-functioning water filtration system removes 99% of microorganisms and chemical contaminants present in the treated water, making it safe to use as drinking water.

Several technologies are available to treat wastewaters. They include adsorption, sub micron filtration, carbon adsorption, ion exchange, and carbon adsorption. The primary process of filtration involves separation of solid or liquid materials from the wastewater. These processes remove large particulates, suspended solids, solid matter, organic matter or certain metals in the water that could prove harmful to human health. In addition, some wastewater treatment filtration systems also feature the use of catalytic bacteria or other biological processes to reduce the amount of toxic byproducts created during the treatment process. Some of the most common wastewater treatment filters are those using active carbon, which traps and absorbs polluting agents while leaving the essential nutrients in the water; carbon adsorption which uses activated carbon to remove dissolved metal and organic pollutants; and adsorption which uses surface area of the filter to trap particles in the water and convert them into inactive compounds.

During the process, wastewater is pumped into an absorption chamber, where it is heated to evaporate. As wastewater cools, it passes through a sieve that is designed to reduce particles in the wastewater by trapping larger particles on its fine mesh strainer. The fine particles are then transferred into a collection cup. Finally, the wastewater is discharged into the underground river that it is drawn from. This entire cycle, called sewage treatment, is usually performed in multiple stages.
