Wastewater treatment systems plants use biological processes to remove contaminants and impurities. The water flows through filters, which trap suspended solids and soluble organic matter, and into settlement basins where they are sluiced away. The resulting wastewater is filtered and aerated to eliminate most of the contaminants. However, the process is very costly because it causes excessive wear to the equipment. To avoid this, the wastewater must be treated as soon as possible.

Septic tanks remove organic matter, such as food scraps, soap, and paper. They allow these materials to settle and form scum or sludge. Bacteria break down the organic matter in scum and sludge, creating gas bubbles that are carried back through the building sewer stack vent (which is located on the roof structure). This material must be removed physically. MassDEP recommends regular pumping every three to five years.

Septic tank systems can either be installed on a residential or commercial property. Septic tanks are designed to handle a single family home or community. Septic tanks are effective in removing microorganisms and impurities from wastewater, and are commonly used for municipal wastewater treatment. The effluent from these systems is superior to that produced by conventional septic systems. Depending on the size of your septic system, you might need to choose between a septic tank and an OWTS.
